City of Lapeer DPW Hydro-Excavating

The City of Lapeer Public Works Department is working with contractors to hydro-excavate service leads to homes for the 530 unknown services to determine what type of service line is feeding these homes. This process involves up to two 10 inch holes one on each side of (shut off valve or curb box) to visually inspect the type of material used in the service line. We are able to excavate about 20 service leads a day depending on soil conditions and roots from trees.

What

Materials will be determined for all of these service lines no later than October 31st. Lapeer City DPW employees will let the homeowners know the findings of the hydro-excavating by letter the following day. This letter will indicate if they have a lead or galvanized service line and are recommended to continue using filters, or if they have a copper or plastic line.

The city will be out back filling all the holes that were excavated after pictures and service line is determined. The city has received a grant to replace all lead and galvanized lines, and the contractor has been selected with replacement to start in the spring of 2023.
