The Operations Division is the department’s largest division. The primary mission of the division is to protect our citizens and their property, as well as our business community by efficiently handling all emergency and non-emergency calls for service that the department is dispatched to.
Many of these calls for service are for true emergencies such as structure fires, vehicle/grass/other type fires, vehicle accidents with occupant entrapment, hazardous material incidents, and other hazardous conditions. We also respond to other less serious situations where we can help make a difference and/or stabilize the incident until the arrival of other agencies. Our personnel take great pride in helping our citizens and businesses during their time of need.
Division personnel provide these services to the citizens and guests of Lapeer, Lapeer Township, Mayfield Township, and the southern half of Oregon Township, as well as to our automatic and mutual aid partner municipalities.
Under the direction of the Assistant Chief of Operations, the division currently employs a Captain, two Lieutenants, and 35 suppression personnel, and operates with 3 Engines, 1 Aerial Ladder/Platform, 1 Heavy Rescue, 1 Tender, 1 Grass/Brush Truck, and a Special Operations trailer.
Steve Stone is the department’s Assistant Chief of Operations. He began his fire service career as a paid-on-call firefighter with the Arcadia Township Fire Department in 1976. He was hired as a paid-on-call firefighter with our department in 1981, and held positions as a lieutenant and captain before being promoted to his current position in 2000. He is responsible for the management of all division functions and activities. Assistant Chief Stone is a part of the department’s management team and maintains relationships with other city, county, and state agencies.
Tom Wittke is currently assigned as the department’s Captain. He began his career with the department as a paid-on-call firefighter in 1985 and served as a lieutenant for six years before being promoted to his present position in 2001. Captain Wittke assists with the management of the division and responds to incidents in a leadership or command position.
Lieutenant Brent Connell manages the operation of, and the personnel assigned to the division’s Red Team. He began his career with the department as a paid-on-call firefighter in 1989 and was promoted to his present position in 2000.
Lieutenant Zeb Schons manages the operation of, and the personnel assigned to the division’s Green Team. He began his career with the department as a paid-on-call firefighter in 1998 and was promoted to his present position in 2011.
