Operations

The Operations Division is the department’s largest division.  The primary mission of the division is to protect our citizens and their property, as well as our business community by efficiently handling all emergency and non-emergency calls for service that the department is dispatched to. 

Many of these calls for service are for true emergencies such as structure fires, vehicle/grass/other type fires, vehicle accidents with occupant entrapment, hazardous material incidents and other hazardous conditions.  We also respond to other less serious situations where we can help make a difference and/or stabilize the incident until the arrival of other agencies. Our personnel take great pride in helping our citizens and businesses during their time of need.

Division personnel provide these services to the citizens and visitors to the City of Lapeer, Lapeer Township, Mayfield Township and the southern half of Oregon Township, as well as to our automatic and mutual aid partner municipalities.

The division is staffed by a Division Chief, two Captains, two Lieutenants and 35 suppression personnel.  Two additional lieutenant positions will be filled in the coming year.  Division personnel operate with 3 Engine, 1 Aerial Ladder/Platform, 1 Heavy Rescue, 1 Tender, 1 Grass/Brush Truck and a Special Operations trailer.

IMGP8508  Thomas Wittke DIVISION CHIEF

Tom Wittke holds the rank of Division Chief and heads the Operations Division.  He is responsible for the management of all division programs and personnel.  He began his career with the department as a paid-on-call firefighter in 1985 and held positions as a lieutenant and captain prior to being promoted to his current position in 2016.  Division Chief Wittke is a part of the department's management team and maintains relationships with other city, county and state agencies.

Captain Brent Connell manages the operation and personnel assigned to the division's Red Team.  He assists with the management of the division and responds to incidents in a leadership or command position.  Captain Connell began his career with the department as a paid-on-call firefighter in 1989 and held positions as a fire inspector and lieutenant prior to being promoted to his present position in 2016.

Captain Zeb Schons manages the operation and personnel assigned to the division's Green Team.  He assists with the management of the division and responds to incidents in a leadership or command position.  Captain Schons began his career with the department as a paid-on-call firefighter in 1998 and was a lieutenant prior to being promoted to his present position in 2016.

Lieutenant Matt Stone assists with providing supervision to the division's Red Team and oversees assigned personnel during emergency responses.  He began his career with the department as a paid-on-call firefighter in 2007 and was promoted to his present position in 2016.

Lieutenant Tim Turkelson assists with providing supervision to the division's Green Team and oversees assigned personnel during emergency responses.  He began his career with the department as a paid-on-call firefighter in 1996 and was promoted to his present position in 2016.
